Profiling Cookies
Profiling cookies are intended to create user profiles and are used to send advertising messages consistent with the preferences expressed by the user while browsing the internet.
Due to the potential intrusiveness of such tools in the user’s private sphere, European and Italian legislation requires that the user be adequately informed about their use and give valid consent. Article 122 of the Privacy Code states that the storage of information on a user’s terminal device or access to information already stored is permitted only if the user has expressed consent after being informed in the simplified manner provided for in Article 13, paragraph 3 of the Privacy Code.
Session and Persistent Cookies
Session cookies contain information used during the current browser session. These cookies are automatically deleted when the browser is closed. Nothing remains stored on the user’s computer beyond the time spent using the website.
Persistent cookies are used to maintain information between visits to the website or for technical purposes and to improve navigation. These data allow websites to recognize returning users and adapt accordingly. Persistent cookies have a duration set by the website and may range from a few minutes to several years.
First-Party and Third-Party Cookies
It is important to consider the entity that installs cookies on the user’s device, depending on whether it is the same website operator the user is visiting (referred to as the “publisher”) or a different website that installs cookies through the first site (“third parties”).
First-party cookies are created and readable by the website that created them.
Third-party cookies, on the other hand, are created and readable by domains external to the website and whose data are stored by the third party.
